JHELUM: A man in police custody on Wednesday confessed to killing
his wife in the name of honour.
He said
that he had brought
his wife, who was Pakistani but practiced m
edicine in Germany, back home to Jhelum with the intention of ending her life. He had killed her and subsequently planned to flee abroad, buying a ticket for the purpose.
Parliament had this year removed a loophole allowing people who committed murders to be exonerated if the victim’s families pardoned them. A bill approved in parliament in this regard was aimed at preventing honour killings in the country. It imposed a pu
nishment of life imprisonment for those convicted of honour killings.
The initiative in parliament was taken after social media star was murdered by he
r brother earlier this year in a high profile case.
